A royal appointment for kff

Organic-Bloomers---horkff, the leading independent foodservice supplier in the south east, recently showcased its range of organic and healthy eating products to HRH Prince of Wales at Millfields Community School, in Hackney, London.

His Royal Highness is Patron of The Soil Association which launched the Food for Life campaign in 2003, with the aim of encouraging more schools to serve unprocessed and locally produced food.

Food for Life targets state that at least 75% of food served should be unprocessed, 30% should be organic and 50% sourced from local suppliers. Millfields Community School serves an impressive 95% unprocessed food, 40% organic and 50% local, and as such won The Soil Association’s ‘Food for Life School of the Year’ award in 2006.

The Prince of Wales visited the school to observe the positive effects of serving healthy and nutritious food and was keen to meet kff, one of the schools’ key suppliers, to find out more about products the company supplies Millfields.

kff displayed its range of organic bread and rolls, including Organic White and Brown Bloomers, which are served sliced in baskets on the dinner tables every lunchtime for the children to help themselves to.

Also on show were organic and low fat yoghurts, an Omega 3 roll, organic frozen vegetables, dried fruit sachets, a pomegranate juice drink, healthy eating savoury pastries and a range of organic fairtrade individually wrapped flapjacks, cereal bars and cookies.

The Prince discussed issues surrounding sourcing organic food with kff purchasing and marketing director, Stephen Clarke. kff has been working closely with Millfields Community School to source not only organic and local produce, but other relevant products as well, which meet or exceed the government’s food-based standards for school lunches. Stephen Clarke explained to His Royal Highness: “although suppliers in foodservice have been slow to react to the organic food trend, kff is working closely with them to develop bespoke products according to our customers’ specific needs.”

Millfields’ head teacher Dame Anna Hassan believes good food can transform and enhance the children’s education and performance. She aims to increase the amount of organic food served in the school to 60% by the end of the year, a target which kff will no doubt help the school to achieve.
